SEE & DO

EXPLORING THE AREA

TAIR CARN

Tair Carn Uchaf and Tair Carn Isaf are located a short walk from Bannau.  The summit of Tair Carn Uchaf sits atop a plateau-like ridge at 482 metres (1,580 ft) above sea level and is marked by one of three huge cairns which give the mountain its name. These cairns are in fact Bronze age burial sites, where cremated remains were covered with the mound of stones, just below the hilltop, in order to have maximum visual impact when seen from below.  The hike to the summit is rewarded with panoramic views of the Amman Valley, Castell Carreg Cennen Castle and the Loughor Estuary.

CASTELL CARREG CENNEN CASTLE

Perched on a limestone crag above the River Cennen and the idyllic village of Trap, Castell Carreg Cennen dominates the skyline.  Dating back to the 13th century Castell Carreg Cennen is the most romantic ruin in Wales – as voted by readers of Countryfile magazine.

For those peckish after exploring the castle, why not visit the Cafe.  Serving a host of delicious treats to satisfy both savour and sweet tastes.

Finish off in the gift shop.  Selling local and Welsh produce. You will be spoilt for choice.

TWRCH TRWYTH

Legend has that King Arthur and his men hunted for the Twrch Trwyth (an Irish king whom God turned into a wild boar for his wickedness) in the Amman Valley.  The legend is a quest for love. Culhwch, cousin of King Arthur, must complete tasks in order to marry his love Olwen. Culhwch enlists the help of King Arthur.  They travel to Ireland to kill the Twrch Trwyth but it escapes across the sea to Wales, where it wreaks havoc with seven other men who were also turned into pigs. King Arthur pursues the Twrch Trwyth through the Amman Valley, the eventual location where two of the seven pigs were slain.  King Arthur eventually fights off the Twrch Trwyth in the River Seven.

DINEFWR ESTATE

Owned by the National Trust who describe Dinefwr as ‘A magical land of power and influence for more than 2,000 years. Dinefwr is an iconic place in the history of Wales’.  Explore the historic Newton House, Castell Dinefwr and the sprawling 800 acre estate. Situated on the outskirts of Llandeilo, the estate is a Sight of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and the first parkland National Nature Reserve (NNR) in Wales.

AMMAN VALLEY RIVER WALK

A 6-mile route between Ammanford and Upper Brynamman which follows the River Amman. Popular with both walkers and cyclists, the route passes through woodlands, leafy lanes and parkland. Situated at the Brynamman end of the walk is the 'Ynys Dawela Nature Park'.  Boasting 3 miles of pathways where you can experience the true beauty of the countryside, which is teaming with wildlife.

BRYNAMMAN CINEMA

Established over 90 years ago, the Hall is an emblem of a bygone era when coal mining flourished in the area and local miners contributed a penny from their wages to fund community facilities.

Brynamman’s Public Hall and Cinema has stood the test of time and remains open to this day. The hall houses an almost perfectly preserved art deco auditorium complete with many of the original fittings.
